Wix offers choice; Squarespace edits the choices first
Wix serves an enormous range of businesses, and its interface reflects that ambition. AI can create a tailored starting site, while templates, apps and business modules let the owner keep adding capability. When the requirements are unusual, that optionality is hard to beat.
Squarespace's templates, Blueprint AI and Fluid Engine keep more design decisions inside a coherent system. There are fewer divergent paths, which makes a polished result easier for a beginner to protect. A power user may find the same guardrails limiting.
Compare the back office, not just the homepage
Wix is particularly strong when the website connects several business models: a store that also books appointments, sells memberships, runs events and markets across channels. Its app market and developer platform create escape valves when the built-in feature is not enough.
Squarespace takes a more integrated route for service and creative businesses. Scheduling, payments, client management, proposals, invoices, email campaigns, digital products and memberships share a consistent account and visual language. Some products or usage levels still carry separate charges, so map the complete operating stack before comparing base plans.
Wix wins the free-plan question; neither wins portability
Wix can remain published free on a branded subdomain. Squarespace instead gives every site a 14-day trial, after which a paid plan is required; official US materials say annual plans begin at $19 monthly. Wix localizes prices and often displays promotions, so compare renewal terms in your own checkout.
A Wix site depends on Wix infrastructure. Squarespace can export a limited subset of content in WordPress XML, but it does not export the whole design, store or platform functionality. Keep independent copies of copy, media, product catalogs and customer records whichever managed builder you choose.
