v0 accepts more kinds of starting material

Lovable is deliberately greenfield. You explain the app, optionally add screenshots and build forward. Once the project exists, two-way GitHub sync gives developers a conventional route into the code. Lovable's own FAQ is explicit that an existing GitHub repository cannot be the starting point.

v0 can start from a prompt too, but it also imports a repository, Vercel project or ZIP and accepts screenshots, mockups and Figma work. Its GitHub flow creates a working branch, commits message-driven changes and opens a pull request when the work is ready. That is a material advantage for a product already in production.

Framework preference is a legitimate tie-breaker

Lovable's current web stack uses TanStack Start and server-side rendering; projects created before May 13, 2026 use React and Vite with prerendering. Lovable documents several ways to move the front end or full backend away from its cloud. It remains a sensible greenfield default when the owner does not need to dictate the framework.

v0 defaults to Next.js and is most fluent with React, TypeScript, Tailwind, shadcn/ui and Vercel. It can add API routes, server actions and databases from the Vercel marketplace. If those are already team standards, v0 wastes less time translating the project into the local dialect.

Both free plans are trials, but they constrain different behavior

Lovable's free workspace offers 30 build credits a month through daily grants, plus small allowances for its cloud and AI running inside the app. Build messages have variable cost in Default Mode, so careful, grouped requests tend to go further than a stream of tiny corrections.

v0's Free plan includes $5 of monthly generation credit and stops at seven messages a day. Plus is $30 per user monthly and includes an equal amount of monthly credit per user, plus daily login credit and shared team purchasing. v0's former $20 Premium plan is being retired and is not open to new users, so old comparisons that call it the default upgrade are stale.

Yes, usually. Next.js is v0's default and its GitHub, Vercel, Tailwind and shadcn/ui workflows are built around that ecosystem. Lovable's current default is TanStack Start, so a Next.js requirement points clearly to v0.

Can Lovable and v0 both build a backend?

Yes. Lovable can use Lovable Cloud, Supabase and third-party APIs. v0 can create Next.js server routes and connect databases such as Supabase, Neon and Upstash through Vercel integrations.

Which one works with an existing repository?

v0. It can import an existing GitHub repository or ZIP and work through branches and pull requests. Lovable can export and sync a project it created, but its documentation says it cannot begin from an existing GitHub repository.

Is v0 free?

v0 has a Free plan with $5 of monthly credits and a seven-message daily limit. It can deploy to Vercel, use Design Mode and sync with GitHub. Generations pause when included credit is exhausted unless the account is eligible to buy more.
