Squarespace does not offer a permanent free website plan. Every site starts with a 14-day trial that does not require a card. Website plans currently start at about $19 a month when billed annually, with price varying by region. Annual plans include a custom domain for the first year; hosting is part of the subscription.

Fourteen days is enough to decide, not enough to procrastinate
The trial opens the editor and lets you build a real site without entering a card. It is useful because the template, mobile behavior and editing model are available before payment.
Use the period deliberately. Add real copy, configure one form or product flow, test on a phone and invite the person who will maintain it. A trial filled with placeholder text proves almost nothing.
The starting number is an annual commitment
Squarespace's lowest advertised monthly equivalent assumes annual billing, and the live amount varies by location. Monthly billing costs more in exchange for a shorter commitment.
Annual website plans include a custom domain for the first year. Put the domain renewal, email, scheduling, commerce and any transaction charges into year two before comparing Squarespace with a one-off build or another hosted editor.
Choose the plan by the money moving through the site
A simple portfolio or service site needs pages, forms and basic publishing. Selling products, memberships or services changes the relevant tier because commerce features and transaction economics matter more than an extra template.
Map one real customer journey—discovery, purchase or booking, confirmation and follow-up—then check each step against the plan table. Do not upgrade for a long feature list you will never operate.
Squarespace earns its price through consolidation
The subscription bundles hosting, templates, visual editing, analytics and a collection of business tools. It is good value for an owner who wants one managed place and does not want source code to maintain.
It is a poor match when an engineering team needs a portable Next.js implementation or an unusually specific interaction. In that case, compare the custom build and its ongoing hosting rather than treating the lowest Squarespace tier as an equivalent product.
