You can build a respectable first draft without paying. Putting it on your own domain, removing badges and keeping it live is where the invoices usually begin.

There are four different meanings of free

A builder can be free to open, free to generate, free to publish or free to keep running. Those are not the same promise. A product may let you make a complete design and still charge for a custom domain. Another may publish a working app but limit how long it stays online or how much database and AI traffic it can serve.

Start by naming the test. If you only need to learn whether your brief produces the right page, a branded preview URL is fine. If customers are about to type card details, free hosting with a badge and a short expiry is not the finish line. Price the real launch before you spend a weekend perfecting the free draft.

  • Free to publish: the public can open a hosted URL.
  • Free to brand: you can use your own domain and remove the vendor badge.
  • Free to operate: traffic, forms, databases and AI calls stay within an ongoing allowance.

Five useful free starting points

These are not ranked from one to five because they start from different material. Lovable and Replit are prompt-led app builders. Wix and Framer lean towards managed website design. Webflow is a detailed visual builder whose AI access and site-hosting plans need to be checked separately.

The limits below were checked on August 12, 2026. Vendor pricing changes often; follow the source link before committing a live business to any allowance.

  • Lovable: 5 daily build credits, capped at 30 a month, plus separate monthly Cloud and in-app AI grants. Good for testing a prompt-led website or web app in small, planned passes.
  • Replit Starter: daily Agent credits up to a monthly cap, Lite build, Design Canvas and one free published app. The published link goes down after 30 days and carries a Made with Replit badge; Full build, connectors and badge removal require Core.
  • Wix: its AI website builder can be used free and the site can be published with Wix hosting. A custom domain, online payments and further premium features require a paid plan.
  • Framer Free: a $0 plan with a Framer domain and an allowance for Agents and other AI features. Framer positions it for trying the product and non-commercial work; connecting a custom domain requires a paid site plan.
  • Webflow Starter: a free site on a webflow.io subdomain with 2 static pages, 50 CMS items and up to 1,000 monthly visits. Webflow's pricing page says AI on a Starter site requires a paid Workspace, so do not count it as a fully free AI workflow.

Pick by what you already have

Have a written product brief and want the tool to decide the interface? Start with Lovable or Replit. Want to drag sections around, tune type and manage the site in one hosted editor? Try Wix or Framer. Want exact control over responsive layout and CMS structure, and do not mind a steeper editor? Webflow is the relevant test.

Have a website design that your business owns or is licensed to reuse? A reference-led website copier may save more time than any blank-page builder. Budget for the site people will actually visit

A free preview answers a design question. A business website also needs a domain, a reliable place to run, working forms, basic analytics, accessible content and somebody who can fix it. Shops add payment fees, product data and order operations. Apps add databases, authentication, storage and usage-based services.

Make a one-page cost sheet before choosing. Put the builder subscription, annual domain, required seats, hosting or traffic allowance, email, paid integrations and expected AI or Agent use on it. Use the monthly cost after the introductory period. A free builder that forces a rebuild in week three is dearer than the modest plan you understood at the start.

A fair 45-minute test for any AI builder

Give every candidate the same real brief. Use your actual business, actual copy and one conversion goal. Ask for a home page, one detail page and a mobile navigation state. Do not compare one tool's polished template with another tool's first vague prompt.

At minute 45, stop. Check the mobile layout, edit the main headline, add one unusual section, connect a form and find the publishing controls. Then inspect what you can take with you. The winner is the one you can keep operating, not the one that produced the flashiest first screenshot.

  • Time to a coherent first draft.
  • Time to make a precise correction.
  • Quality of mobile behaviour, not just desktop appearance.
  • Clarity of code, content or design ownership.
  • Real monthly cost for your domain, traffic and collaborators.

When free is enough — and when it is not

Free is enough for a prototype, a private design test, a student project or a short-lived page where a branded subdomain does no harm. It can also be enough to prove that you dislike a tool before committing money. That is a valuable result.

Pay before a public launch when the business needs its own domain, unbranded presentation, stable availability, private work, more collaborators or predictable support. Do not let sunk time turn a free-plan limitation into a product strategy. Export, upgrade or change tools while the site is still small.
